At the end of 2013, it is a time for 過去を振り返る kako wo furikaeru reminiscing
And here, I reminisced of the helping hand that pulled me up when I was at the deepest trouble.

Source: http://takayama-foundation.or.jp

I would like to say thank you and dedicate the 2014 new year message to the 高山国際教育財団 Takayama kokusai kyouiku zaidan Takayama International Education Foundation or briefly known as TIEF.
Thank you for helping and supporting me.
What's more, this website is also made possible by TIEF.
Without TIEF, I would not have made this website.

Money Problem In Japan

I went to study in Tokyo in Oct 2009.
勇敢な私 yuukan na watashi Courageous me (some say silly me) went there with all the money that spent 5 years saving.
The money I had wasn't much given the high expenses that the city demands.

Tuition fees, food, accommodation, and transportation took a big chunk of my money away.
As a new student in Japan, I had no qualification and the proper documents to apply for a part time job.
So, there was no income.

After 6 months, my money is almost dried up.
If it went on, I would had to give up studying in Japan.
Whatever leftover money I had would be used to buy myself a plane ticket home.
It would felt like a 大失敗 daishippai complete failure.

Glimmer of Hope

Glimmer of hope

Coincidentally, right at the time of need, came a glimmer of hope.
TIEF is offering scholarships to Asian students.
That was the only hope I had.
With my lousy Japanese at that time, I tried very hard to complete a composition to tell why I needed that scholarship.
I wrote and rewrote. Threw it away. Wrote and rewrote.
Over and over again.
To make it perfect.

Second glimmer of hope came when I passed the first round and qualified for the second round - the interview.
Gosh, even an interview in English would made my heart pound out of my chest, what's more in Japanese.

Again, I cracked my head to figure out what they would ask me.
Wrote the answers. Threw it away. Wrote and rewrote.
Memorize. Threw it away. Memorize and re-memorize.

Sure as it was. Interview almost took my heart out of my chest.
I somehow survived the interview.

A week later, the results were out....
It was the best news I heard. Music to the ear. Hot fire in the cold winter.
The happiest moment in my life. TIEF gave me a 奨学金 shougakukin scholarship.

How It Changed My Life

Sunflower blossoming on a sunny day

It was like water during drought when I got the scholarship.
Like sunflower blossoming on a sunny day.
With the financial assistance, I completed my studies and return home feeling proud and happy with myself.
I joined a multinational Japanese company.
With my new skill, I used my Japanese language skill to link between the local people and the Japanese people in the company. In Japanese, it is called 架け橋 kakehashi a bridge.

Next year, I will join an American multinational company, and my Japanese language skill will be an asset when dealing with Japanese counterparts.

I hope to improve my Japanese language skill further and play a bigger role in the future.

It was not just money.....

Besides monetary support, TIEF provided me an opportunity to learn about not just the Japanese culture but also Asian culture from other countries.
During each 例会 reikai regular meeting, we would learn something new about Japanese/Asian culture.
Students of different country and cultural background share their experience and knowledge in one common language - Japanese.
Magical, isn't it?

Thank you note

There are really so much to talk about how TIEF had made a difference in my life.
To keep it short, I end it here. If you wish to know more, put it in the comment.

ありがとうございました & 明けましておめでとうございます
arigatou gozaimashita & akemashite omedetou gozaimasu
Thank you TIEF & Happy New Year 2014.

川崎といえば ... kawasaki to ieba ...When we mention Kawasaki..., the first thing that comes to my mind is the Kawasaki bikes.
My dad used to own a Kawasaki bike.
Kawasaki bike shop

I thought when there will be a lot of Kawasaki bikes in Kawasaki.
Throughout my walking journey I saw only one Kawasaki bike store.
Seems to have more Lawson convenience store than the Kawasaki bike stores.

Getting to Kawasaki

Getting to Kawasaki Daishi

Board the JR Keihin Tohoku Blue Line to the Kawasaki Station.
It is a big station.
Modern building with shopping malls.
You may want to explore the shopping malls on your way back.

乗る noru Get on the Keikyu Kawasaki Line.
Just a across the street from the JR Kawasaki Station.
The Keikyu Kawasaki is a smaller line, but I like it.
It gives a feel like a tram more than a train, which I liked it very much.

降りる oriru Get off at Kawasaki Daishi.

Kanayama Shrine

The first attraction would be the Kanayama Shrine.
I have never seen any shrine to so 頭が柔らかい atama ga yawarakai open minded.

Kanamara Shrine

Here there are no figures of animal or people statue.
But a huge glittering statue of a big ちんちん chinchin pen*is.

Kawasaki Daishi Kanamara Shrine
The figures of pen*is is everywhere within the shrine compound.
On the banner.
On the wishing board.
On the souvenirs.
Kanamara Shrine souvenirs

It was interesting to see and read people wishes written on the wishing board.

People come here to ...を祈る wo inoru pray for fertility and a child.

The fun part is in the Spring, where there is a festival.
People celebrate it by parading the huge pen*is around town.
That sounds interesting doesnt it?

Kawasaki Daishi Heiken Ji

Kawasaki Daishi Heiken Ji

The Kawasaki Daishi Heiken Ji is not far away from the Kanamara Shrine.
I find this place to be very calm and welcoming.

I guess my feeling of calmness and welcoming is true when I saw the what was written.
It says: 祈りと平和 inori to heiwa "Prayers and peace".

Kawasaki Daishi Heiken Ji

Enjoyed the tranquility and calmess.
Furthermore it was autumn.
The cool breeze was amazing.

Walking back to the JR Kawasaki Station

The Keikyu Kawasaki only took me less than 15 mins.
It wasnt traveling fast anyway.
So I thought walking back to the JR Kawasaki Station would not be any longer.

Guess how long it took me to walk from the Kawasaki Daishi Heiken Ji to the JR Kawasaki Station.
1 hour 20 mins.
Anyway, I took my own sweet time leisurely walking back.
Looking around, smiling at the scenes around me.

The first thing that made my smile would be the sunset.

Kawasaki Daishi Sunset

The second smile was when I was watching parents playing with their children on a "ship" playground.

Kawasaki Daishi Park

Then I came to this park where these young guys were playing baseball.
Anyway, 野球 yakyuu baseball is like a Japanese national sports.
9 out of 10 Japanese is crazy about baseball.
So I sat there and watch them played for a while.

Kawasaki Daishi Park baseball

Then when I thought these guys only accepts high school boys.

This boy came in, "who said so?"

Walking Dogs

Japanese people love walking dogs
You know what, someone told me before that dog is part of the family.
To the singles, dogs are their partner.
Well dogs are 忠実 chuujitsu loyal.

Hongqiao Market

It was very near to Bestay Hotel Express Tiantan Beijing.
Wasn't interested in pearl or jewelry, but since it was near to the hotel, visit Hongqiao Market anyway.
Surprisingly, the 1st floor wasn't selling any pearl or jewelry at all.
There were electronics, toys, souvenirs, accessories, etc.

Bought myself a Gorilla Pod, that could 対応する taiou suru support a SLR camera.
First quote was CNY80.
"No", I said
"How much you want?"
"CNY50", I replied
"CNY60," she said.
My heart started to move. Thought it was reasonable. Maybe I could agree.
But wait..."No, CNY50 is my final price", I said trying my luck.
"Deal!" she said.

Hahaha....got myself for CNY50.
Perhaps I could go lower, but since I started with CNY50, that`s cool with me too.

Tips: Don't agree on the first price. Start by cutting half the price. Goes up a little from there. If you can't get the price you want, just walk away. Sometimes the best deal comes when you walk away.

Qianmen

Me and Qianmen Street
I 思わなかった omowanakatta never thought Qianmen could this beautiful.
I thought it was just another street like the Wangfujing Street.
But no, it was so different from Wangfujing Street.

I would recommend you to consider Qianmen instead of the Wangfujing
qianmen shopping street mcdonalds
Blend of east and west. McD at far end.

I like the 調和 chouwa blend of modern stores and the grey bricks of Chinese houses.
I like the fusion of Western & Eastern brand side by side on the same street.

qianmen shopping street tram
Tram also called Ding Ding Car because of the bell sound it makes.
Ding! Ding! Ding! The tram is coming.
They call it the Ding Ding Car.
Go onboard and it will take you from one end of the street to the other end for CNY 20 one way ticket.

If you are looking for a お買い得品 okaitoku hin good bargain.
Get off the main street and go to the back street.
You can get some silk scarf for as low as CNY10 per piece.
I bought 3 and I am pretty satisfied. They are smooth and nice enough for me.

Also there are some CNY 5 shops. Everything is sold for CNY 5. No need  交渉する koushou suru to bargain.
I saw a cap with a panda on top. It was sold for CNY 33 at Jingshan  Park.
Here I can get it for CNY 5.

CCTV tower

Being in Beijing, I thought I should not missed out the iconic CCTV tower.
Took the subway all the way to Gongzhufen station.
Came out and I didn't see anything iconic.
I saw a tower, but it isn't in a squarish shape.

Old CCTV Tower at Gongzhufen

Oh gosh, this is the 古い furui old CCTV tower!
There is another 新しい atarashii new CCTV tower!

I had to take the subway Jintaixizhao station, which is at the other end of the line.

It is quite a big station. Exited the wrong station and got lost.

Asked a few person to get to the tower.
That's the 中国語が話せるの利点 chuugokugo ga hanaseru no riten benefit of speaking Chinese.

Finally, I had reached the tower.
It was tiring after all the wrong routes taken, but when I finally reached, it was satisfying.

Night Flight

Took a taxi to the airport.
Taking the night flight back to Malaysia.

It was a very satisfying trip from planning, making it happen and visiting all the places we wanted to.
We are glad we did a free and easy tour. We didn't have to visit the factories or any outlets where tours would usually bring us to. Could had wasted much time there.
We had our time fully used on enjoying Beijing.

We also did it on a budget. With very little money spent, yet we are very happy.

It was a great trip.

If you are planning a trip, we would to make it great for you too.
Leave us a comment. We will get back to you.

Peking Duck

Beijing peking duck
Before the ducks are roasted

How could I say I have been to Beijing without having Peking Duck before, right?

The price of a decent Peking duck can be from as cheap CNY88 to CNY300.
Some can even price higher, depending on the 人気 ningki popularity.

Some told me to go to Quanjude. But the price was crazy to me.
Surveyed a few more, but I decided to go for the one nearest to Bestay hotel.
I thought it was a 賢い kashikoi wise choice.

The price was 手頃 te goro reasonable.
The place is fantastic. Beautifully decorated. Clean. Staff looks neat.
Most importantly, the smile was there. It was hard to find around Beijing.

Ordered the CNY133 kamo duck.
Said to be using a higher grade of sauce.

Waited quite a while.
It was worth waiting.
Chef sliced the duck in front of us.

Temple of Heaven

There are many gates into the Temple of Heaven.
Foolish me.
Didn't notice the East Gate was only a 100 metres away, I walked 300 metres to the North Gate.
Could have saved some walking energy there if I had been 観察力が鋭い kansatsu ryoku ga surudoi observant.

temple of heaven ticketing office

I bought the entrance ticket for CNY15.
The entrance ticket only gets you into the park.
If you want to visit the building, you would need to pay another CNY20.
You could purchase the combo ticket for CNY35.

It is the どれでも同じ same anyway.

The interesting point about the Temple of Heaven is the architecture.

Temple of Heaven Architecture
Architecture in round and square shapes

3 Main areas:
Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests
Imperial Vaults of Heaven
Circular Mound Altar

The whole area is based on 丸い marui circular and 四角い shikakui square shapes.

The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is a round building on a square platform.
The Imperial Vaults of Heaven is surrounded by round walls.
The Circular Mound Altar is of course a circle, on top of a square platform.

The entire place is in a semi circle.

The circle represents 天国 tengoku Heaven.
The square represents 地球 chikyuu Earth.
Remember, ancient times, Earth was thought to be square.

The interesting point in this place is the Echo Wall.
It is said that if 1 person ささやく sasayaku whisper at one end of the wall, the other would hear it on the other end.

You would not be surprise to see there are many people putting the Echo Wall to test.

Temple of Heaven Echo Wall

I saw this mother was speaking out loudly:
"Can you hear me? Mama is here!"
"I can hear you"
"Can you hear me?"

Then I saw a few people came over to her and asked:
"Can you really hear her (your child)?"

She said: "Yeah, I hear her voice. She said mama, mama."

In my mind I was thinking.
Are you sure?
Maybe it was all just in your mind?

Come on, firstly, the place is not too big, if you shout a little louder, the other side would have heard a faint voice.
On the contrary, if you went a little softer, I doubt you would hear anything considering the amount of people and noise and all the disturbances.

Circular Mound Altar

Temple of Heaven Lingxing gates
LingXing Gates

Pass through some white gates, the Lingxing Gates. That always come in three.
The middle one is used by the Emperor.

Suggest you to use the middle one and get a feel of the Emperor`s path.
Imagine yourself in the past surrounded by guards and ministers who dared not step in a single foot into the middle path.

Take the middle gate and the middle path up to the top of the Circular Mound Altar.
Step on Heaven Heart Stone.
This is where the Emperor つなぐ tsunagu connects with Heaven.
Asking for blessing from the Heaven.

The Heaven Heart Stone is a very popular.
Only 2 feet in diameter, and every wants to get a spot on it.
Not to connect with Heaven.
But to connect with Facebook and upload the photo and see how many likes you get.

Times have definitely changed.

Is chaoyangtheatre.com a scam?

Easily accessible by subway to Hujialou Station.
Chaoyang Theatre is right next to the Exit C.

My advice; get a discount online instead of purchasing through the counter by yourself.
I got my ticket from http://www.chaoyangtheatre.com/
Was afraid it was a 詐欺 sagi scam.
Check up and down for the website validity.
Now that I came back from the show, I can assure you that it is real.

Simple steps:
Email the guy, Dragon Wang.
On that day, he will wait for you at the entrance.
I made an appointment with him at 6:20pm.
Reached there around 7:00pm.
Thought he had left.
He was still there with a small China flag.
He had a paper with my name written on it.
It was really not hard to recognize him.

I paid him in cash.
But he didn't pass me ticket instantly.
Got a little 心配 shinpai worried.
He took my money and went to counter and bought the ticket.

Hmmm...if I buy by myself over the counter, I pay CNY180.
...if Dragon Wang buy for me over the same counter, I pay CNY120.

Wow, discount 30%!

Tips: Actually the hall is not so big. You don't have to buy the VIP seats.

Ice cream in Chaoyang Theatre
As cool as ice cream
There will be a 15 mins break after 45 mins show.
Then there was this girl that I could not help noticing her ego in selling ice cream.
Walking around in this face, repeating "ICE CREAM".
No smile.
Cool. (as ice cream)

Total show time: 1 hour 45 mins.
The show comes one after another without any small breaks in between.
They were professional.
When they failed an act, they will redo it until it become successful.

The last show was the most exciting.
5 motor cross bikes in a sphere cage. Passing by each other precisely just inches away.
There was 間違える余裕がない machigaeru yoyuu ga nai no room for mistake.
There could not redo it.
One mistake, they could die.
I was worried for their life.
I was worried I would witness a terrible act went wrong.
Phewww!!!! Luckily it went well.
The excitement + anxiety really pushed it to the climax.

Thank you for the great show!

Beijing Zoo

Beijing Zoo Entrance

Beijing Zoo was planned as a つまみ tsumami "side dish" rather than a "main dish".
The main reason we went to Beijing Zoo was the Panda House.

Entrance ticket to the Beijing Zoo

The entrance to Beijing Zoo + Panda House + Boat trip = CNY40
If you want to visit the aquarium, you can add some money. But I 興味がなかった kyoumi ga nakatta wasn't interested.

Panda House

Young bamboo shoots around the Panda House

Young take bamboo shoots were planted surrounding the area.
Whereas the pandas were 閉じ込められたlocked in their cages and play area.
The pandas can only see their food nearby but cant touch them...hahaha.

First went to their play area.
Expected the pandas to be 遊んでいる asondeiru playing, but disappointed.
They were sleeping. Motionless. Boring.
Sleeping Panda

Went to another area. Sleeping too.
Another sleeping Panda

Went into another area.
Sleeping too.
You must be kidding me. Sleeping again?

Luckily another was awake and having 朝食 choushoku breakfast.

Even saw うんこをする unko wo suru taking a dump right in front of us.
What a show!

Do Not Knock!!!

Honestly, I am not a zoo fan.
Seeing all the animals in their captivity sometimes just make me feel sad.

What makes me even more sad in the Beijing zoo is that despite the sad destiny of the animals, they still had to bear with some of the Chinese people that 簡単な指示を従うことができなった kantan na shiji wo shitagau koto ga dekinakatta could not obey simple instructions.

ガラスをたたかないで

DO NOT KNOCK ON THE GLASS

It irritated me when I was watching the sleeping animal and then I get startled by the loud noise of some id*#ts knocking on the glass.
That was damn annoying.

Gosh, I hope the bear is not allergic to cookies.

Simple instruction.
Barely followed.

That was what I didn`t like in the Beijing Zoo.

Boat Trip

Boat trips from the Beijing Zoo

The part that excites me was the boat trip.
The combo ticket will include the boat trip.
http://www.travelchinaguide.com/attraction/beijing/zoo.htm

There are 2 boat trips:
  1. Round Trip to Purple Bamboo Garden (returning to the Zoo)
  2. Single Trip to Summer Palace (not returning to the Zoo)
Boat to the Purple Garden

My plan was to take the Round Trip to the Purple Bamboo Garden, then upon returning, I take the next boat to Summer Palace.
Sounds 完璧 kanpeki perfect!

I queued up for the Round Trip to the Purple Garden.
Imagined strolling alongside the aesthetic bamboos and a lush green garden.

Went into the boat.
A guide were explaining the history of the waterways.
The waterways that were using were also used by the Empress Dowager Cixi.
The bridge on top were low in height. During rainy days, the boat would not be able to pass through.
It was interesting.
At the end she announced that we have arrived at the Purple Bamboo Garden.
Excited. I was ready to get off the boat.

The boat turned around.

"That was the Purple Bamboo Garden. We are heading back," said the guide.

Oh my goodness. We are not getting off the boat? Just a glimpse?!
I can`t see much at all and now we are heading back?

That was it. Purely a boat trip.
Throughout the trip, you will be in the boat. Don't expect you will be able to get off into the Purple Bamboo Garden.

You thought that was disappointing.
When I got back to the zoo, I queued up for the next boat trip to the Summer Palace.

They told me that I have taken the boat to the Purple Bamboo Garden, I cannot take the boat to the Summer Palace.
If I want to take the boat to the Summer Palace, I would need to pay CNY40.

That was total ばかばかしい bakabakashii nonsense.

Angry and disappointed.
Although I can pay, I didn't pay.
I would rather go and take the subway to the Summer Palace.

Wasted an hour of my time to get to the Summer Palace.
Take the boat to the Summer Palace

My advice: If you plan to take the boat trip, take the boat to the Summer Palace.

Summer Palace

Entrance to Summer Palace
Entrance to the Summer Palace
Arrived at 4:30pm. Closing at 6:00pm.
Meaning I had only 1.5 hour until it close.

There are the combo tickets. CNY60.
And the entrance ticket. CNY30.

Bought the entrance ticket since I only had 1.5 hour there.
I didn't think that I had the time to visit all the places.

Same strategy as the Forbidden City.
Follow some guides, they will they you stories.

Interesting Facts and Tales in the Summer Palace

The Summer Palace is the resort for the Empress Dowager.
There is even a "cinema" there.
Cinema for the Empress Dowager Cixi

Of course, no movies, just Chinese operas.

Qilin, legendary animal with
dragon head
lion tail
ox hooves
deer antlers
scales all over the body
is symbolic to justice.
Summer Palace Qilin
Qilin in Summer Palace
It is said that if you were into business that counts on luck such as gambling business, you are not advised to place a Qilin.
The Qilin is there to watch over the ministers and officers to ensure they are always just.

The Dragon and Phoenix usually represents boy and girl.
But in the Summer Palace, it represents the Emperor and her mother, the Empress Dowager Cixi.

Dragon the Emperor
Phoenix the Empress

The interesting point is the platform of which they are standing on.
The Phoenix will have plenty on the platform, while the Dragon will have nothing.
It means the Empress Dowager Cixi will hold everything, and the Emperor would have nothing.

The Emperor would have to ask from the Empress.

The Long Corridor
The long corridor stretch along the lake.
Believe me, it is very long. I didn't even finished walking till the end.
The interesting point is the painting on the ceiling of the corridor.
Every few steps, you will see a drawing on the left and right ceiling.
Every few booths, you will see a big drawing on the ceiling.
Each drawing is different and unique representing a certain stories.

The Light Pole to indicate the Empress is resting
If light is raised on the tall pole, it means that the Empress Dowager Cixi is resting, and not to disturb her.

When Empress Dowager Cixi is bored and missed her child, the Emperor, she would come to this building
Royal Telephone Room
and make a call to the Emperor using a public telephone.
The Royal Phone
Really??!!
Of course not, I'm just kidding.

Walking to the 17 Arch Bridge

The 17 Arch Bridge

By the time we had finished the Long Corridor, it was 6pm.
I really thought that I made a wise decision not to purchase the combo ticket.
Saved myself CNY30.

Since the building were all close.
I went for a walk to the 17 Arch Bridge.
It was a long walk, but a very relaxing one.

4 things made it relaxing.
  • The Kunming Lake
  • Draping tree leaves
  • Cool breeze
  • Sunset view
The combination was so calming and relaxing.
Honestly, I really didn't want to leave if it was not because the sky is getting dark.

Moreover, I was afraid the main gate was going to close and I had to walk a big round around the Summer Palace.

Luckily they had the small door opened when I left.
It was 7:30pm.

Gui Jie Again!!

Decided to visit the many restaurants selling all the "Ma Lat" spicy spicy food.

It took a while to decide which restaurant to enter.

Some usher were pushy. I hate it. Definitely not going in.
Some don't have menu to preview. I hate it. Not going in.

Honestly, you don't have to bare with the attitude of the usher.
If you don't like them, just walk away.

This one the usher were patient and had a menu.

I ordered
Ma La Pork.
Gosh, this is really spicy!!!
Brush off the chili aside to find the pork.
They really gave me lots of pork underneath those chili.

Ma La Pork

Mushrooms with vegetables.
Simple dish and I love mushrooms.
Inside there were 3 types of mushrooms topped with oyster sauce.
